As you’ve probably seen on television via advertisements, Greek Style Yogurt is a fairly new popular niche in the yogurt market. But what is it about Greek Style Yogurt that makes it special, and may make you want to say Opa! We take a look at some of the benefits of eating this Greek delight that will please even the gods.
Yogurt has always been a popular staple in Mediterranean diets, and has been made for several thousand years. Known for its positive effects on the digestive tract, yogurt makes a good breakfast, snack, or even dessert.
While there are many choices of yogurt, Live Greek Style Yogurt remains the most recommended, because of its high protein and reduced sugars. This style of yogurt will be thicker and creamier due to the increased protein content. Greek Style essentially means the yogurt is strained. Straining the yogurt removes the whey which contains large amounts of carbohydrates. Some other benefits of eating this type of yogurt are that it can reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol while improving “good” HDL cholesterol, which can keep arteries working efficiently. As with other dairy consumption, eating yogurt can help rev up fat-burning in the body, especially at the waist line! Lastly, yogurt contains Vitamin B12 which is useful for vegetarians as it prevents dry skin, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
The best choice is to purchase “Live” Greek Style Yogurt which contain live cultures – the fresher the better. Short of taking a trip to the Aegean, try to purchase from local health food stores or farmer’s markets. The difference is that commercially produced yogurt will have the cultures added, whereas the “homegrown” versions contain naturally occurring cultures. On the island of Corfu, A bowl of Greek-Style yogurt is often enjoyed for breakfast or a dessert and is combined with honey, and nuts such as walnuts and almonds. These also add other useful minerals and vitamins, such as Omega 3 Fatty acids from walnuts. For a breakfast, it may be balanced with fruit such as berries, bananas, or even Kiwi.
